Calculating Square Footage

  1. First of all you will need calculator, tape measure, pen and paper.
  2. Then measure the area you need to know its footage with a tape measure by taking the account its length and width in feet and inches.
  3. If you want to get only a fast estimate in feet, it could be very easy: you should only multiply measured width and length numbers in feet rounded to the nearest number or half number. As example if the length of your room is 14 feet and 6 inches, you should take the number 14.5 feet.
  4. In case you want to know the exact square footage of you room, then transfer its exact measured length and width into inches, multiply numbers and then divide by 12 to get exact value of your footage in feet. This is because a foot contains 12 inches.
  5. When the area in question is a triangle, then measure its base and height. You will get its footage by multiplying this numbers and dividing the amount by two.
  6. In case you have complex shapes, you should divide them into rectangles and triangles. After calculating these separate areas according by previous rules, you could get exact answer by summing up calculated numbers for all rectangles and triangles making up your area under question.
